The number of people hospitalized with coronavirus in state hospitals has increased to 101, while during this period there is also an increase in the number of those affected by other viral infections, which mainly affect children, the press representative of the OKYPY, Charalambos Charilaou, told KYPE, calling the public to observe the protection measures, also in view of the festive season.

There is a small and steady increase in terms of hospitalized patients in OKYPY hospitals with coronavirus, said Mr. Harilaou. “We are among the 101 patients, of which two are in the Intensive Care Unit and another eight are hospitalized in conditions of increased care”, he noted, adding that the OKYpY is ready and “in case there is a need to increase its beds to treat such incidents, he will”.

He added that at the moment no post-covid patients are hospitalized in the ICU, while for long-covid cases, the Organization operates a clinic at the Nicosia General Hospital, “with very good results”. The clinic, “is staffed by a specialist medical pathologist with a lot of experience in the coronavirus and is connected to the various other specialties and to the Department of Physiotherapy, so that in case a patient is referred we can serve him holistically”, he noted.

< p>Asked if there is an outbreak of other infections at this time in state hospitals, Mr Harilaou replied that we are in the winter season and, as expected, we have quite a few viral infections at this time. He noted that children are most affected by RSV, where we see an increased case flow in pediatric clinics. “And there we have a plan to deal with such incidents. There is a network of pediatric clinics in all our hospitals, where they provide medical care where and when it is needed,” he said.

He added that these viral infections are not new, they appear every year, especially in children. “What was noticed this year is that they came earlier than we expected. They usually come around the end of December, they came from the middle of November, the beginning of December.” As he said, the reason, according to experts, is that, especially children, because of the coronavirus and the restrictive measures that were in place, had not been exposed to this virus, which is why we have this outbreak at this time.

“Our appeal to the world is, especially this Christmas season, to be especially careful, i.e. to take all the necessary measures recommended by the experts: to wear our mask, to keep our distance, not to crowd in closed spaces and especially in spaces without good ventilation, in order to prevent the disease”, he noted.
