There seems to be a slight decrease in tourist bookings in Larnaca compared to last year, Marios Polyviou, President of the Larnaca Hotel Association, told KYPE.

He added that “with the start of the summer season there seems to be a slight decrease in bookings compared to last year, but by no means can we characterize the year as unsatisfactory. But with the data of the previous year, we measure a decrease which we will see at the end of the season given that the reservation map has changed, since there are too many last-minute reservations,” he said.

In response to a related question Mr. Polyviou said that “the bankruptcy of the German tourist organization FTI has not greatly affected the bookings in the province of Larnaca because the bookings we had at our hotels were few. However, this bankruptcy does not cease to be a blow to tourism, especially from markets such as Germany and Poland, where the specific tourist organization specialized”, he pointed out.

He also noted that “with the bankruptcy of FTI, we are losing a partner who supplied Larnaca with quality tourism, but to a lesser extent than other provinces”.

Referring to the ongoing war in Ukraine, the President of the Larnaca Hotel Association said that “this has essentially killed the flow of tourist arrivals mainly from Russia, which three years ago was one of the main markets for Cyprus. In other words, it is a given that with the absence of the Russian market, a part of the traditional visitors to Cyprus is missing”, he pointed out.

He added that “the new fact of this year's tourist season is that the market from Israel has also been affected, which last year had a huge dynamic and a large increase in arrivals in Larnaca as well, and which was perhaps the main market of the city. We hope that a solution to the problem will be found in order to end the war and stop what we see every day happening in our neighboring country”, he pointed out.

He was asked to state whether he is optimistic about the rest of the tourist year in Larnaca, Marios Polyviou said that “it is a given that there are specific problems such as the war in Israel. There are still the Euros being held in the summer as well as the Olympic Games in Paris and it seems that many people will choose instead of taking a traditional vacation, to go to watch these two major sporting events that take place on European soil,” he said.

Furthermore, the elections that will be held on July 4th in Britain, which seem to somewhat 'break' the flow of arrivals in Cyprus, the prolonged economic recession in Europe and the United Kingdom, the problems in air transport with some reduction of seats, and the increase in air ticket prices, seem to affect the flow of arrivals and will not allow us, as things show, to have a tourist year this year, equal to last year”, he concluded.
