The Department of Population and Immigration Record announced yesterday 5/8 that the old types of identity cards, which do not have an expiration date, will be valid until August 3, 2026, when they will be abolished. In fact, the holders of ID cards, which do not have an expiration date, are invited to replace them by August 3, 2026 at the latest.
According to what was announced, the abolition is obligatory and a result of the EU Regulation 2019/1157 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 20 June 2019, on strengthening the security of the identity cards of the citizens of the Union and the residence documents issued to its citizens. Union and their family members, exercising the right of free movement.
In fact, as noted, all other types of ID cards, which have an expiration date, continue to be valid until their expiration date.

The process for a new identity
On the occasion of the above announcement, Offsite presents what procedure is needed to replace the ID, the form that the interested party must fill in and how much it costs.
In order to obtain or renew an Identity Card, the interested persons must submit an application. Applications are submitted to the District Administrations, the Citizen Service Centers and the Citizen Centers (post offices).
When submitting the application, the biometrics (photo and fingerprints) and the signature of the applicant are obtained on the spot by specially trained and authorized officials. Also, when submitting the application, the fees provided by law, amounting to € 30, must be paid.
In case the application is submitted by a person who acquired Cypriot citizenship through naturalization or registration, then when submitting the application, the following must be submitted together with the application:
- the original foreign birth certificate (if the applicant was born abroad),
- the original naturalization certificate or registration
- Application for obtaining or renewing a Minority Identity Card
For the acquisition or renewal of a minor ID card, an application is submitted to the District Administrations, the Citizen Service Centers and the Citizen Centers (post offices), with the payment of a fee of € 20.
Minors under 12 years
The application must be completed and signed by both parents, father and mother, before the Receiving Officer.
In case one of the two parents is abroad, the application must be completed and signed by the parent who is in the Republic and must be accompanied by a written consent of the parent abroad, that he / she consents to the issuance of his / her ID Card of his minor child. This consent must be certified by the Consular Authority of the Republic.
If the parents are divorced, then the application will be signed by one of the two parents who has custody and parental responsibility and the application must be accompanied by a Family Court Decree on custody and parental responsibility.
It is emphasized that only the photograph of the minor is taken during the submission of the application. If the applicant chooses to submit a photograph himself, it must meet the required specifications.
Minors over 12 years
For these persons, the application can be completed and signed by one or both parents.
When submitting the application, the biometrics (photo and fingerprints) and the signature of the applicant are obtained on the spot by specially trained and authorized officials. If the applicant chooses to submit a photograph himself, it must meet the required specifications.
It is emphasized that in all cases of persons who acquired Cypriot citizenship through naturalization, then when submitting the application they must be presented together with the application:
- the original foreign birth certificate (if the applicant was born abroad),
- the original naturalization certificate
Application for replacement of ID Card due to loss or theft or destruction
To replace an Identity Card due to loss or theft or damage you must apply to the specified type, which can be found at the bottom of this page. Applications are submitted to the District Administrations, the Citizen Service Centers and the Citizen Centers (post offices).
In case you have lost your Identity Card or it has been stolen and is still valid, you should file a complaint with the Police for the loss / theft as well as an Affidavit in Court and you should submit these documents together with your application. It is emphasized that for minors the conditions mentioned in the above paragraph regarding the signatures of the parents apply.
