We have been living the theater of the absurd for almost a week now. Would you say it is the first time? No, but the case with the demolition of the preserved houses, despite the Archdiocese, is surrounded by so many contradictions and so many provocative actions or inactions, that it leaves no hair untouched.
The whole government revolted. The president of the largest and ruling party mobilized. The most competent authority for the case, the Municipality of Nicosia, was on its feet all these 24 hours, together with successive sessions of the municipal council, but the result is almost negligible. And we come to this conclusion, regardless of Saturday's decision by the city council that says something about restoration. A decision in which no one gives credence and everyone considers it an attempt to forget the issue, something common for the Cypriot data.
We got to this point because from the beginning the competent authority, the Municipality of Nicosia was unable to handle the issue. When one considers where, how and under what circumstances the crime took place, one will draw the appropriate conclusions. The demolished buildings are located a few meters from the office of Mayor Konstantinos Giorkatzis. Surely when the heavy machinery began to be demolished, the Mayor should have smelled it. And if his sense of smell did not work, his hearing would certainly work. If not she could use his sight. Why not? At some point he would open the office window to get some air (the day was sunny) and he would see what was happening next to the mansion where he lives.
None of this happened. Because if it happened, Mr. Giorkatzis should have mobilized the services of the Municipality to stop the immunoassay. On the contrary, he remained happy in the warm office and only when others informed him did he start moving lazily. But it was too late. His indecision was proverbial here too. He was instructed on how to act, on the basis of the law. He ignored it. He limited himself to lukewarm statements. Mesoamerican attitudes. He referred to bureaucratic procedures and time-consuming policies. Until we got to repeated city council sessions that ended up in a hole in the water.
But the Mayor had all the power and strength in his hands to act legally and decisively, to enforce the right and the law. For something like that, however, you must want. Did he want it? You must be able to apply the law. Could; These are questions that remain meteoric, as meteoric remains the decision with which the preserved will be restored.
