Imprisonment of 3.5 years, 4 years and 8 months in three categories respectively, was imposed by the Criminal Court of Nicosia on February 1, on two persons from Turkey, who admitted that in order to make a profit they helped the entry of immigrants into the territory of the Republic and specifically 13 people from Syria.
The offenses in which the accused were found guilty, according to relevant information, concern:
(1) assistance in the illegal entry of third-country nationals into the territory of the Republic;
(2) Smuggling of migrants in violation of international treaties, and
(3) Transportation of a person by sea by unsafe or overloaded boat in violation of articles of the Penal Code.
It is noted that the offenses in the indictment were committed before the amendment of the relevant laws that increased the sentences from 8 to 15 years for the first category and from 2 years in prison to 12 years in prison for the third category.
