Imprisonment of an employer and an employee for illegal employment

The Famagusta District Court today sentenced a 49-year-old employer to three months in prison and a 33-year-old foreign employee to two months in prison for offenses related to illegal employment, in violation of the Aliens and Immigration Law.

According to the Police, on January 26, 2020, as part of a campaign for undeclared / illegal employment, a foreigner illegally located in the territory of the Republic of Cyprus was spotted by members of the Aliens and Immigration Service carrying out construction work at a hotel under renovation in Agia N.

During the interrogation, the foreigner named the 49-year-old as his employer.

Judge Michalis Papathanassiou expressed concern about the alarming escalation observed in the commission of such crimes and noted all the serious consequences that this entails, in the labor market and in the economic and social life of the place.

Mr. Papathanassiou decided that the appropriate sentence for the two is that of imprisonment and imposed a sentence of three months on the 49-year-old and a sentence of two months on the 33-year-old foreigner.
