The non-performing loans at the end of December 2021 decreased to 11.1% of the total loans, from 17.7% at the end of 2020 and 15.4% at the end of September 2021 and amounted to € 3 billion, up from € 5.11 billion in December 2021, according to data released by the Central Bank on Thursday.
Specifically, from September 2021 to December 2021 there was a decrease of & nbsp; € 1,290 million or 30.1% in total non-performing loans.
Total loans decreased from € 27,902 million at the end of September 2021 to € 27,012 million at the end of December 2021, showing a decrease of € 890 million or 3.2%.
It is noted that during the period 31.12.2014-31.12.2021 there was an overall decline in non-performing loans € 24.3 billion or 89%, after falling from 47.8% of total loans to 11.1%.
The Central Bank notes that the downward trend in non-performing loans in the fourth quarter of 2021 is due, in order of importance, to the sale/transfer of loan portfolios to credit acquiring companies, loan repayments, including debt swaps. assets (real estate) and loans that have been successfully restructured and reinstated in the category of serviced loans at the end of the monitoring period.
The reduction of non-performing loans was also due to the write-offs of loans made either in the context of restructuring and usually concern amounts for which there are precarious provisions in the accounts of credit institutions, or concern non-contractual or “accounting” write-offs against amounts already included in forecasts for a more representative representation of lending portfolios.
The coverage ratio reached 43.1% at the end of December 2021, compared to 45.7% at the end of September 2021 and 46.2% in December 2020.
The total loans restructured by the end December 2021 amounted to € 3,374 million, of which & nbsp; € 1,469 million are still included in non-performing loans.
It is noted that to determine non-performing loans, credit institutions are required to apply the definition adopted by the European Banking Authority, according to which when a non-performing loan is restructured it is not automatically transferred to the non-performing loan, but remains under the category of non-performing loans for an additional period of at least 12 months, even if the borrower follows without the new agreed repayment schedule.
Therefore, according to the relevant definition, part of the restructured loans remains as not serviced even if the borrower adheres to the new repayment schedule.
