In Cyprus the rate of inequality between men and women is 10.4% while in the EU this percentage is 16%, according to the Committee on Gender Equality.

The Commission in its message on the occasion of February 7, 2021, Day of Equal Remuneration of Men and Women in Cyprus states that the purpose of the Day is to highlight the long-standing issue of inequality between men and women.

According to the Commission communication, the gender pay gap is the difference between the average salary of men and the average salary of women for the economy as a whole.

As noted, the gap in the European Union in November 2020 was 16%, which means that for every € 100 a man is paid, a woman is paid € 84. In Cyprus the wage rate is 10.4%.

However, the Commission says, the pay gap is not an indicator of the general equality between men and women as it only affects workers and reflects the different working standards of women. They do not take into account, he adds, the proportion of low-skilled or unskilled women and the high pay gap is usually typical of a highly segregated labor market, such as Cyprus, in which a significant proportion of women work part-time.

The statement said that research has shown that the actions of the social partners help reduce the pay gap, as well as legislative interventions, strengthening monitoring mechanisms and other indirect initiatives to support women's employment and reconciling work and family life. gender equality in general.

The Committee on Gender Equality in Employment and Vocational Education, through various actions that it develops such as forums, seminars, newsletters, aims to inform employees, employers, students and society as a whole.

The information concerns, among other things, the pay gap between men and women in employment and vocational training. Its main aim, it is noted, is to be able to contribute to the definition or revision of the national policy on gender equality issues through suggestions and recommendations to the Ministry of Labor, Welfare and Social Security, to monitor and further improve the effectiveness of its implementation. by the competent authority of the Ministry, in extracting valuable conclusions through surveys and statistics, in providing advice to anyone interested in gender equality issues and in general to contribute to the elimination of discrimination and inequalities in the workplace.

The aim of the Commission is, the communication concludes, through a continuous effort to contribute to the consolidation of a work culture free from direct and indirect discrimination, and this is reflected in national policy and collective agreements by extension.
