Two men sentenced to 3.5 years in prison for migrant smuggling – They were spotted off Cape Greco

The Permanent Criminal Court of Larnaca – Famagusta, which met today Thursday in Larnaca, sentenced two men, aged 42 and 47, to 3.5 years in prison after finding them guilty in connection with a case involving the transportation of persons by waterway with an overloaded vessel.
According to the facts of the case, on the evening of July 24 2022, a vessel was spotted sailing approximately 11 nautical miles southeast of Cape Greco, carrying 58 irregular migrants from Syria, 46 men, 3 women and 9 minor children.
The boat was approached by a Coastal and Maritime Police vessel and the migrants reported to the police that they started in the early hours of July 24 from a deserted beach in the city of Tartous, Syria with >boat, which they all bought together.
They also mentioned that with the help of of phones they started with destination Cyprus.
