In Sudan the president of the African Union

The president of the African Union Commission, Moussa Faki Mahamat, will move "immediate" in Sudan, in an attempt to convince the two conflicting sides to declare a ceasefire, the pan-African organization announced today, while the violent clashes in that country continue for a second day.

Expressing the "deep concern" of the situation, the AU called on the forces of the generals ruling Sudan to “protect civilians”, in a statement issued after an emergency meeting of the Peace and Security Council this afternoon.

At the moment there is no specific information about the peace mission undertaken by Musa Faki Mahamat.

The AU called on the opposing sides to "quickly adopt a peaceful solution" and to start a dialogue to resolve their differences while he "categorically rejected any external intervention that could complicate the situation in Sudan.

Earlier, Saudi Foreign Minister Faisal bin Farhan bin Abdul spoke by phone with both General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, the head of the transitional government, and General Mohammed Hamdan Daglo, or “Khameti”, the head of the paramilitary Rapid Support Force. (RSF) and called for the de-escalation of the situation.

According to Saudi Arabia's public television, the minister appealed for peace.

Meanwhile, according to Reuters reporters in In Khartoum and other Sudanese cities, the country's state television stopped broadcasting this afternoon, but the reasons have not yet been clarified.

The army and the RSF agreed to a three-hour ceasefire to remove the wounded through “humanitarian corridors”, however they “retain the right” to respond in the event that this agreement is breached. An eyewitness from central Khartoum said that the fighting seems to have stopped, but sporadic gunfire was still heard and smoke was rising from various parts of the capital.
