SIDIKEK-PEO blamed Nikos Nikolaidis for the issue that arose with 90 temporary workers

As “untrue and disoriented”, characterizes the former mayor of Limassol, Nikos Nicolaidis, a recent announcement by SIDIKEK-PEO, which assigns him responsibility for the issue that arose with 90 temporary workers, after the information that the new mayor, Yiannis Armeutis, does not intend to renew their contracts.

In its announcement, SIDIKEK-PEO attributed the issue that arose to the former Mayor “and the majority group that supported him, who, beyond and outside the budgets and the collective agreement, hired avert temporary workers, in the most undemocratic way to carry out permanent needs, resulting in the collective reaction of the trade union movement and the whole issue becoming the subject of a labor dispute”.

Nikos Nikolaidis states in his today's written statement that, “the announcement of SIDIKEK – PEO is in complete dissonance with reality and as an announcement by a trade union organization it cannot but be judged as class-oriented”. “It does not serve the truth, nor the workers, nor labor peace. What he obviously seeks to serve is political expediency only,” he adds.

Although he himself, as he adds, will not go into the essence of the matter, as the labor dispute process is ongoing, he cites a series of facts “which SIDIKEK-PEO deliberately ignores”.

Specifically, he notes, during his term as Mayor, “all procedures for the recruitment and permanent employment of temporary workers in the Municipality of Limassol were carried out through the Labor Recruitment Committee provided for by the legislation, in which representatives of the three largest Municipal Groups participated, including the Municipal Group of AKEL” .

“All the decisions of the above Committee were unanimous, as were the approvals of its minutes by the full session of the Municipal Council”, he continues and underlines that “no decision to hire or permanent temporary workers was questioned during the 7½ years of of the previous Municipal Council from any of the three Trade Union Organizations, including SIDIKEK-PEO”.

He also adds that “the decisions to hire temporary workers were based on the official reports of the competent Supervisors and Department Heads for the current needs of their departments in temporary workers” and that “all permanent temporary workers were made with the aim of filling vacant permanent positions, which the trade unions strongly supported”.

Finally, the former Mayor of Limassol expresses the position that SIDIKEK-PEO's announcement “serves nothing but labor institutions and labor peace, a goal that should be a fundamental priority of all partners involved in the Municipality of Limassol”.
