The bill on the establishment and operation of an independent Anti-Corruption Authority will be passed in the Plenary Session of the House of Representatives as soon as the article debate in the Legal Committee is completed, even if disagreements continue, said the Chairman of the Committee Nikos Tornaritis, assuring that it will be a “strong piece of legislation”.
Mr. Tornaritis stated that the discussion on the bill is at an advanced stage and there is only one session left to complete the discussion by article.
“Some positions and concerns of the parties are on the table. We do not have to pass a law to say that we have passed a law. “This legislation must be a strong legislation, which sends at all levels the message that the Republic of Cyprus is entering the rails of controlling corruption wherever it comes from,” he said.
Responding to a question, he said he was committed to advancing the bill in plenary as soon as the article-by-article debate is over, even if differences continue. “It simply came to our notice then. “I personally make a commitment to send it to the Plenary and let each of us assume his responsibilities,” he said.
He did not want, he continued, to blame the parties and added that very soon the bill will be brought before the Plenary.
He concluded by emphasizing that “it will be a strong bill, it will not be a cover”.
