Complaints and complaints about marine pollution incidents have increased in recent days, as stated in a statement by the Municipality of Limassol, noting that “the source of the pollution is in almost all cases at sea and not on land” and that involvement is needed of the competent state agencies to combat the phenomenon.

Indicatively, the Municipality mentions in its announcement that today, around 07:30 am, it was informed by the VSS-EPE/VTS consortium (contracting company that executes the offer of the Municipality of Limassol for the provision of marine pollution prevention/treatment services) about a specific incident of pollution .

“An effort was made to deal with it by the company, while the relevant government agencies (Deputy Ministry of Shipping, Department of Fisheries & Marine Research) were also informed so that they could proceed with their own the actions”, reports the Municipality of Limassol.

“From the investigation of all the incidents to date as well as the incidents of previous years, it is clear that the source of the pollution is in almost all cases at sea and not on land”, adds the announcement.

He also notes that on 10/08/2024 an inspection campaign was carried out of the Limassol beachfront and mainly of the rainwater pipes by Inspectors of the Deputy Ministry of Shipping and the Municipality of Limassol without any source of pollution being identified. Furthermore, it states that in collaboration with the Department of Fisheries and Marine Research, absorption barriers (Booms) were installed at a specific point (end of the embankment).

The Municipality of Limassol states that so far he has undertaken “initiatives beyond his powers and responsibilities” and that “the involvement of the competent state agencies that have the appropriate means of combating pollution is needed”, while clarifying that the Municipality does not have the jurisdiction to impose penalties on violators.

It also recalls the recommendation for the establishment of an Ulama for Immediate Action and Prevention, so that there is a total control of the sea and it is not carried out piecemeal by various services.

“The Municipality of Limassol hopes that every possible effort will be made by the Deputy Ministry of Shipping in order to achieve a coordinated action, with the aim of more effectively dealing with marine pollution as well as investigating of today's incident”, concludes the announcement.
