Investigators found that they were speeding following an outdated map on Google Maps. The mapping service reportedly told them to cross the bridge, which had no signs indicating it was out of service after it collapsed in 2022 following severe flooding. Unaware that it was damaged, they sped across and tragically died.
The three men all worked as security guards, according to local media. Their bodies were taken by boat to the nearby town of Faridpur for an official autopsy. After the tragedy, four engineers and another unidentified engineer from Google Maps werecalled in for questioning by local police, reported the Times of India.
Enraged by the incident, family members of the victims and local residents criticized the local authorities for not closing the unfinished bridge. “Officials must be held accountable for this negligence. Why was the bridge left unfinished and why were there no safety measures in place?'' a relative of the victims told Hindustan Times, adding that an official inquiry was required.
A Google spokesperson told local media in a statement: “Our deepest condolences go out to the families. We are working closely with the authorities and providing our support for the investigation of the matter”.
