She claimed her husband “tied her up and left her in the woods to die without food or water”
< strong>An American woman found chained to a tree, “screaming” in a forest in the western Indian state of Maharashtra had tied herself up, police and her doctor told the BBC.
50-year-old Lalita Kayi was rescued about 10 days ago from the dense forests of the district. Sindhudurg, after shepherds heard her cries for help. In a written statement to the police, she had claimed that her husband “chained her and left her in the forest to die without food or water”.
Kayi, who has been taken to a psychiatric clinic, has not spoken publicly. The US embassy also declined to comment, citing her right to privacy.
A police inspector said the 50-year-old now claims she is not married and may have been hallucinating when she gave her first statement.
< p>She said she was upset “because her visa had expired and she had run out of money so she bought locks and chains and tied herself to the tree”.
The head of the psychiatric hospital where the 50-year-old is being treated told the BBC that “her condition is improving. He eats, walks and also exercises. She is being treated and we are also giving her some nutrients that were missing from her body.” The doctor emphasized that her family has been located in the US and that she is in contact with them on the phone.
Lalita was found in the jungle on July 27 by a shepherd who heard her cries for help. “The sound was coming from the forest on the mountainside. When I went there, I saw that one of her legs was tied to a tree. He screamed like an animal. I called other villagers and the local police,” the witness said.
When she was found she was unable to speak but gave investigators a handwritten note accusing her husband of tying her up and abandoning her for to die without food and water.
She had with her a mobile phone, a tablet and 31,000 rupees or 370 dollars.
