The only way to reverse the ongoing process of job obsolescence is to restore full ATA and extend it to more workers including low-wage workers who are paid the minimum wage salary, the improvement of the new minimum wage regime and the activation of a process of successive general increases in the wages of workers in the business sector, finds the annual Report on the Economy and Employment 2022 of the Cyprus Labor Institute (INEK) PEO.

Speaking at the presentation of the INEK-PEO Report, which took place at the offices of PEO, in the presence of the General Secretary of AKEL Stefanos Stefanos, the President of the Board of the Institute and< strong> CEO of PEO Sotiroula Charalamboushe said that “the claim made by the employer that ATA would have an impact on the competitiveness of the Cypriot economy is arbitrary and without scientific support”. He added that “the application of the full ATA is not going to affect productive investments but the excess profits that are channeled to other, non-productive, uses”.

“The restoration of the full ATA and the strengthening of the militancy of the trade unions and political organizations of the working classes are obstacles that can be put in the process of the devaluation of labor that is underway,” he said and added that “the current attempt at a major devaluation of labor is an episode of the confrontational politics that capital owners are now following in order to increase their already high profits”.

He also stated that “they have left the field unregulated in terms of the mandatory implementation of agreed collective labor agreements by all employers and industries which are covered by contracts”.
