Without any provocation and despite the clear peaceful mood of the protesters, the members of the police forces started spraying us with pepper spray and hitting us in the groin, when we tried – without the use of force – to break the blockade and carry out our march. others announcing the initiative as “As Dame!” in relation to yesterday's episodes.
The announcement as it is:
February 13 will go down in history as a landmark of political disobedience in Cyprus. About 1,000 people ignored the unconstitutional decrees that violate fundamental human rights and took to the streets to protest against corruption and state authoritarianism.
However, the intentions of the repressive forces have shown in the strongest terms that respect for constitutional and human rights does not exist in their corrupt democracy. The clearly anti-fascist and class nature of our mobilization, led the police to blockade entire building blocks, to develop fully armed police in dozens of patrols and motorcycles, to use drones and of course the water cannon with the imaginative name “Aiantas”.
The riot police prevented the preselection / path Port to reach our protest starting point, and then base, cutting the remaining blocks of the demonstration between Kolokasis park and Stassinos avenue.
Without any provocation and despite the clear peaceful mood of the protesters, the members of the police forces started spraying us with pepper spray and hitting us in the groin, when we tried – without using force – to break the blockade and carry out our march.
The 11 arrested were released on ridiculous charges. Nine of them remained for a long time in the same cage, in violation of the decrees of the law on disinfection, which allegedly violated our peaceful protest. It is worth noting that most members of the repressive forces did not wear their insignia and hid their identities.
Many supporters were injured and taken to hospital for first aid. More seriously injured, a 25-year-old musician, who was shot directly in the face by “Aiada”, as a result of which she lost consciousness and with the risk of permanent damage to her vision.
Among the victims of police brutality was another young protester, who was brutally kicked in the neck while he was already immobilized on the ground, recalling the not-so-distant past, the murder of George Floyd by their accomplices in the USA.
This is the government of the corrupt Nikos Anastasiadis and the authoritarian “justice” of the ministry of Emily Giolitis. A government that shamelessly resorted to the last refuge of the corrupt, the brutal violence, relentlessly beating peaceful protesters.
We saw on the streets of Cyprus images of police violence that we used to watch in the US, Greece and other foreign countries. But know that we are not afraid and we will continue our fight. As she tells us in the note sent to us by Anastasia: “I do not regret anything! Good strength to all “.
On the way we will break the terror.
