PASYEK-PEO states in its announcement that studying very seriously the situation that is developing in OKYpY in terms of working conditions and the burden borne by hourly workers due to the ongoing understaffing in all Departments of the Organization, it informs that it will take over in the following days dialogue and consultation initiatives with the unions of the hourly staff in order to examine the ways of reaction of the workers.

“As PASYEK-PEO, in the last three years we have warned many times about the poor condition of the hospitals and the understaffing of the staff, but unfortunately our warnings were not taken into account by the Organization”, it is stated in a statement of the guild.

In the announcement it is stated how in previous years OKYpY inaugurated new building facilities including the new wing at Famagusta Hospital, the intensive care unit at Nicosia General Hospital, the COVID-10 ward at Paphos Hospital, etc. without hiring additional hourly staff, resulting in workers taking on an unbearable burden.

“At the same time, OKYpY announces a Children's Accident and Emergency Department at the Nicosia General Hospital as well as a new building in Paphos that will house the Hemodialysis Unit, without consultation with the Trade Unions regarding the arising needs for staff and without any information about the planning”, it is added.

As mentioned, the last straw is the non-inclusion in the OKYPY budget of an increased fund for hourly staff as well as the reports of the Organization's executives about their intention not to proceed with additional recruitments for the new needs of the Organization within 2023.

“Since the day of establishment of OKYpY, the hourly workers have offered much more than they can bear, they work endless hours due to the needs that arise every day in Public Hospitals, offering to the Organization but also to the Cypriot society and they expected a different treatment”, it is noted in the n announcement.
