A pioneering idea for the location of the new archeological museum of Limassol was presented today by the Municipality of Limassol to the Minister of Transport, Communications and Works, Giannis Karousos, proposing its creation a short distance from the shoreline, through embankment, within the sea area of Aktaia Odos. between the marina and the new port.
In the morning, Giannis Karousos, accompanied by representatives of the Department of Antiquities and Public Works, attended a meeting at the Limassol City Hall, where the proposal of the municipal authorities was submitted, he made it clear that the existing museum would not be upgraded, which he considered a “waste of public money”.
As he explained in his statements, the budget for the upgrade of the existing museum and for the rental of transport areas of its objects, exceeds the 15 million euros that were foreseen, while at the same time the fact that it is a small space that is not easily accessible and does not meet the standards that a museum should meet, “especially a provincial museum and a museum of a big city like Limassol”.
“That is why the decision in the Ministry is that another place must be found, so that we can build a new museum, which meets the standards and specifications that all modern museums in the world meet, that is, to be accessible, to offer the an experience that should be for the visitors, to have life all day and night, to be a place of both entertainment and culture “, he added.
The Ministry, he continued, asked the Municipality of Limassol as proposing specific spaces and a month ago a relevant proposal was considered, which was rejected, while now the new proposal for the location of the new museum is being considered, “something very different, apart from stereotypes”./p>
The Municipality, said Mr. Karousos, proposed the creation of the new museum, through an embankment, in Aktaia Odos, “something that we do not reject and on the contrary, we find it quite an interesting and innovative solution, if I can describe it that way “.
The details of the proposal submitted are expected to be discussed, within a month at the latest, between the Municipality of Limassol, the Department of Public Works and the Department of Antiquities “because we want to have a timetable, to decide whether to proceed”, he added.
Asked about the request of the Municipality of Germasogeia and the surrounding communities for the location of the new museum in ancient Amathus, Giannis Karousos said that, “regardless of what will happen in Limassol, my intention is to proceed with the creation of a museum in ancient Amathounta ».
The provincial archeological museum is different and the case of ancient Amathus is different, the Minister clarified, noting that “it is a unique archeological site, it must be upgraded, there must be a museum with the characteristics of the site, the ancient port, the market and everything , what else is there, so that the visitor can be informed about one of the most important ports of antiquity “.
On the issue of creating a museum in ancient Amathus, he said, a meeting will be convened soon with the involved Municipalities and communities.
In addition, in statements, the Mayor, Nikos Nikolaidis, expressed his joy for the fact that “the Minister embraces our vision, which speaks of the creation of a museum worthy of a modern city, technologically upgraded, interactive, which is a a landmark, an emblematic building, not only for the present generation but also for future generations. “
