<p data-block-key=An inter-ministerial meeting to review the progress of the implementation of the National Strategy for the Development of Mountain Communities and determine the next steps is scheduled for the next few weeks the Minister of the Interior Konstantinos Ioannou.

Speaking at the opening ceremony of the community building “Giannakis Papadouris” in Kalopanagiotis, on Sunday morning, Mr. Ioannou said, in particular, that “I have scheduled a meeting with the Commissioner of Mountain Communities in the coming weeks as well as an inter-ministerial meeting with the relevant Ministers and Deputy Ministers , in order to examine the course of implementation of the National Strategy and determine our next steps for the rapid implementation of the actions included in it”.

The Minister of Internal Affairs noted that there is political will to implement measures and policies with the ultimate goal of the development of the countryside, while he described Kalopanagioti as a model community.

“Having experienced brilliant times, but also periods of decline, Kalopanagiotis, thanks to the vision and love of its pure residents, has achieved something that few communities have achieved in Cyprus, but also in the European Union”, he said. “Not only has it stood the test of time and preserved its legacy, but it has transformed into a model community, proudly receiving accolades and an example for all mountain communities in Cyprus and the European Union,” he noted.

“Kalopanagiotis is now an example to be emulated, a developing community, which gives momentum to the neighboring communities, which are gradually being upgraded and become nuclei of entrepreneurship, culture and social development, while protecting the natural wealth they have and preserving their historicity”, he added.

“The enormous development of the Troodos communities puts them in an advantageous position in view of the implementation of the Local Government reform. Now having the knowledge to implement projects, which upgrade the Communities and improve the service and daily life of the residents, the new environment of the Local Government will be even more beneficial for all of you”, emphasized the Minister of the Interior.

“Especially the establishment of the Service Provision Complexes comes to rationalize the way the Communities operate, with multiple benefits both for the Local Authorities themselves, but mainly for the residents”, he underlined, adding that with the establishment of correct procedures, based on Budget standards and organizational charts and primarily by recruiting staff with specialized knowledge, it expects to help communities operate on a solid basis for progress, making the most of national and European funds, for the benefit of local communities.

At the same time, he said, “continuing and upgrading successful policies of the previous Government, we have completed the revision of the Housing Plans for the Revitalization of Mountainous, Hilly and Disadvantaged Areas, so that they meet today's requirements and include more of our fellow citizens who live in the mountainous areas.” . In the near future we will be able to provide more details, he added.

“I know that in the framework of the Regulatory Plan, priority was given to other projects that would bring more immediate results for the residents of the Community of Kalopanagiotis and not to community buildings,” said Mr. Ioannou. “The result proves that the prioritization that was done was the most correct. European Union funding programs and national resources were used extensively to create public infrastructure which subsequently attracted private investment and further upgraded the product the Community now offers,” he added.

Addressing the community leader of Kalopanagiotis, he assured him that the Government will not only continue to support him, but expects him to dare more. “After all, how could we abandon a Community, an entire region, which is possessed by the feeling of collectivity and belonging, which has a vision, which set and maintains a high bar?”, he stressed.

Subsequently, the Minister of the Interior pointed out that “the appointment by President Christodoulidis of the Commissioner for the Development of Mountain Communities proves the truth about the political will that exists to reactivate the implementation of the National Strategy for the Development of Mountain Communities , but also other policies and measures, with the ultimate goal of the development of our countryside and mountainous regions, recognizing their value for the whole of Cyprus”.

“I have scheduled a meeting with the Commissioner of Mountain Communities in the coming weeks as well as an inter-ministerial meeting with the relevant Ministers and Deputy Ministers, so that we can examine the course of implementation of the National Strategy and determine our next steps for rapid implementation of the actions included in it”, he noted, finally.
