Islamic State leader killed in Sahara in French military operation, Macron says

French President Emmanuel Macron has announced that French military forces have killed Islamist Adnan Abu Walid Sahrawi, the leader of the Islamic State in Greater Sahara.

“It's another major success in our fight against terrorist groups in the Sahel,” Macron said in a tweet, without revealing the area where the operation took place.

Sahrawi was the historic leader of the Islamic State in the Sahel region of West Africa and his team attacked US troops in a deadly attack in 2017, according to Macron's office.

In August 2020, Sahrawi personally ordered the assassination of six French charitable workers and their Nigerian driver.

Macron said in July that France would soon begin reshaping its power in the Sahel, where it was at the forefront of the fight against extremist Islamists, and would eventually halve its military presence.
