Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, 67, intends to withdraw from the race to be the leader of his party next month, a decision that would mean he would leave office, Japanese media reported today.
The Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), dominant in Japanese politics for decades, in power almost continuously since 1945, is scheduled to organize the intra-party process to emerge its leader in September.
Mr Kishida has informed senior government officials of his decision, according to reports including Japan's public broadcaster NHK and Kyodo news agency.< /p>
Mr Kisida, who was elected leader of the FDP in October 2021, has seen his popularity plummet due to rising prices hitting households and a series of political and economic scandals in his party.
