Kadis: Optimism for prospects of modernization of the agricultural sector

The Minister of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment, Kostas Kadis, expressed his optimism about the course and prospects for the modernization and reconstruction of our agricultural sector, speaking at the 1st Pan-Cypriot Conference on the topic: "Agricultural Development – From Research to Practice".

The Conference was organized by the National Agricultural Network, the Department of Agriculture, the Agricultural Research Institute and the Cyprus University of Technology.

In his greeting, Mr. Kadis said that the Conference proves that our country can promote and utilize research results in the field of agriculture and expressed the belief that the results of the Conference will be used in the most appropriate way to improve competitiveness of the agricultural sector of Cyprus.

He stated that the topics of the Conference which are the environment and agriculture, the introduction and use of new technologies and the role of agriculture in the food industry, are intertwined with the strategic objectives of the Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment, as well as with the objectives of the Common Agricultural Policy of the European Union.

Nowadays, the Minister said, agriculture has a wide role to play, since it is directly linked to the protection of the environment, the conservation of natural resources and the production of safe and quality food – especially ensuring food security is a major and emerging challenge due to and the consequences of Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

At the same time, he continued, the practice of the agricultural profession in our time no longer depends only on the workforce, but on familiarity with the use of new technologies and the application of innovations .

Therefore, he added, actions such as this Conference give the opportunity to organizations and individuals, who deal with applied research issues, to present the results of research works related to Cypriot agriculture and to exchange views with agencies of rural development, with the aim of implementing the results of the research in practice and, according to’ expansion, the improvement of the production process.
