One of the founding members of the Democratic Party, Giannos Lakkotrypis, spoke about all the behind-the-scenes consultations between the parties, which preceded the election of Annita Dimitriou to the Presidency of the Parliament. In his statements to Politis 107.6 & 97.6, Giannos Lakkotrypis clarified that Annita Dimitriou was not the first choice of the Democratic Party for the Presidency of the Parliament, noting that the goal of the Democratic Party, after the result of the parliamentary elections, was to bridge the gap that separates The Parliament from the real civil society and explained that on the basis of this logic a proposal was submitted by the Democratic Party for the election of the Presidency of the Parliament, the candidate of the largest opposition party.
Giannos Lakkotrypis, who was an eyewitness to the whole process that preceded the election of the Speaker of Parliament, said that the proposal submitted by DIPA, concerned the support of the AKEL candidate – the largest opposition party – which in this case was the Secretary General of the party Andros Kyprianou, from all parties except ELAM and DIKO. Provided that, in case the roles in the 2023 Presidential elections are reversed, ie the Presidency of the Republic passes to the opposition, then the presidency of the Parliament would go to DISY, so that the President of the Republic and the Speaker of the Parliament are not from the same party space. .
This process, as Mr. Lakkotrypis explains, started last Tuesday with DIPA talks with AKEL, DISY, EDEK and the Ecologists. According to Mr. Lakkotrypis late on Wednesday night, even the President of DISY Averof Neophytou had consented to this proposal and yesterday the General Secretary of AKEL had given his positive answer on the condition that all parties, except ELAM, they would consent. However, according to the DIPA member, AKEL around 14:00 yesterday yesterday and while the election process in Parliament was in progress, informed that it decided not to finally support Karoyan's proposal with the justification that the EDEK parliamentary group did not gave its approval to Marinos Sizopoulos to proceed with this proposal. After this decision of AKEL, Mr. Lakkotrypis explained, DIPA had no obligation to support a specific candidate and therefore the decision was made to support Annita Dimitriou.

Andros Kyprianou says otherwise
The political office of AKEL had accepted the proposal of DIPA under conditions, the Secretary General of AKEL Andros Kyprianou stated to Politis 107.6 & 97.6, conveying his own version of what preceded the election of Annita Dimitriou to the Presidency of the Parliament. According to Mr. Kyprianou, AKEL had conveyed to Mario Karoyan that his proposal would be accepted by AKEL, given that there would be a broad consensus of the opposition political parties, except for ELAM. Regarding the issue of the presence of DIKO or not in this effort, the Secretary General of AKEL claimed that until the last moment in AKEL they knew about the support of DIKO. Asked whether or not there was an agreement with DIKO and Nikola Papadopoulos, Mr. Kyprianou denied such a thing.
