After years of consultation and planning and the approval of the European Commission, the New Energy Market Model has been approved with the ultimate goal of opening up the electricity market in Cyprus and creating a single European, liberalized energy market, where in the long run there will be an improvement and expansion of the energy services provided to the final consumers at more competitive and affordable prices, always taking into account the safe operation of the electrical system.
The position of the CCCI is that regulatory stability, within the framework of full transparency, is a very important parameter in the smooth transition to the competitive electricity market where consumers will have the right to freely choose a supplier. & Nbsp;
Rising fuel and electricity prices as a result of the war in Ukraine have caused serious concern to consumers, businesses and households. & Nbsp; That's why we welcome & nbsp; the initiative of CERA for public consultation on the Draft Regulatory Decisions on “Temporary Regulation of the RES-H Purchase Price” for the Plan of the Republic of Cyprus “Plan for the Production of Electricity from RES with Final Outcome October 2017 ”.
The surge in electricity prices should not lead us to piecemeal measures with short-term benefits that & nbsp; escape the ultimate goal, which is to open up the electricity market and will end up maintaining a closed system & nbsp; power generation that will favor monopoly situations & nbsp; which in the future can only harm the interests of domestic and business consumers. Something like that & nbsp; counters and neutralizes in practice all the benefits to consumers that market liberalization seeks to bring.
Only when the combination of RES and energy storage technologies matures can it lead to the economically optimal development of the energy mix and networks, and hence to the long-term reduction of prices to the final consumer. The investments (networks and substations) foreseen in the Ten-Year Transmission System Development Plan 2020-2029 must be accelerated as they are, perhaps, the most serious obstacle in the substantial promotion of large developments & nbsp; RES.
Finally, we note that private investors acted in accordance with the legislation, as approved by Parliament, harmonized with European directives, & nbsp; for the opening of the electricity market and should not be differentiated in the process & nbsp; against them for maintaining the dominant position of the EAC. Private investors are already offering lower prices than the EAC, but the potential for greater electricity supply from private producers/suppliers is limited and needs to be strengthened in the context of market opening.
