The Cyprus Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCC) expresses its direct opposition to the ongoing methods and irregular decisions of the trade union movement, which create unrest and dysfunction in the port of Larnaca.

< p>In particular, the KEBE strongly condemns the strike that the port workers at the Port of Larnaca spontaneously, unjustifiably, arbitrarily and willfully went on today, Wednesday, November 9, 2022. Unfortunately, once again the traders from the Port of Larnaca are captives of an uncontrolled professional group, which only sees its own interest, ignoring the problems and suffering created by its own attitude, holding the economy hostage after it has paralyzed the import and export trade.

This decision of the dock workers and the Unions is completely unjustified, irregular and blatantly violates the Industrial Relations Code, as well as the agreement  to regulate strikes in essential services. It is not possible for small groups of workers, arbitrarily and without taking into account labor institutions, to cause paralysis of vital sectors of the economy, inflicting major blows on the development of the country.

The timeless position of the KEBE is, as imposed legislative regulation of strikes in essential services. Only with this coercive measure will everyone be forced to comply and observe the labor institutions, so that they stop undermining the economy and adding problems to the entire people.

The KEBE calls on the Government and the Parliament , without further delay, to take the necessary initiatives for the immediate promotion of the relevant legislation, to prevent similar unacceptable situations in the future.

The KEBE also calls on the trade unions to respect the Industrial Relations Code they have signed and to immediately lift the strike measures, so that the port can operate smoothly.
