Foreign Minister Konstantinos Kombos declared that the UN envoy should be left to do her job. This was also the message conveyed by Nicosia to the British High Commissioner on the occasion of his recent statements.
K. Kombos speaking to RIK emphasized that the Cypriot government does not accept logics of searching for a middle line< /strong>, that is to find something between the basis as determined by the resolutions of the Security Council of the United Nations and the position of the Turkish side on a two-state solution. According to the Minister of Foreign Affairs, someone should also evaluate how counterproductive such an approach can be.
As for the timetables for achieving results, the Minister of Foreign Affairs referred to the very announcement of the appointment of Maria Angela Holguin Cuellarwhere “the absence of a timetable is evident”. He announced that the Greek Cypriot side is ready at any moment and has the will to start negotiations immediately.
Regarding Holgin's contacts in Ankara, K. Kombos indicated that the whole process is in its initial stages and he underlined that the visits of the General Secretary's envoy should not be reduced to turning points. “We have to wait patiently to see how it progresses and what the next steps are,” said the foreign minister.
