A total of €893,028 was paid by the Cyprus Agricultural Payments Organization (KOAP) to agriculture and livestock sectors in order to support the economy after Russia's attack on Ukraine.

In particular, according to an announcement by KOAP, the categories to which the beneficiaries under reference fall are the recognized groups and organizations of vegetable production producers, the recognized groups of goat and sheep breeders, the cooperative companies that operate in the same areas and for corresponding products as the groups and organizations of vegetable producers production, as well as the cooperative companies active in the production and sale of “base wine” for the production of PDO Commandaria wine.

It is noted that the Cypriot economy suffered a significant blow due to the measures taken to limit the spread of the Covid-19 disease. “These measures have had a particularly significant impact on the primary sector, which has not been able to recover after the lifting of restrictions after seeing production costs soar due to huge increases in feed, energy and fertiliser,” it added.< /p>

“In Cyprus, where a significant percentage of foreign tourism is made up of Russians and Ukrainians, additional problems were created due to the sanctions imposed on Russia resulting in the non-descension of Russian tourists and a greatly reduced number of Ukrainian tourists since their country is at war,” the press release states.

It is added that although the tourism industry compensated a significant number of tourists from these countries in terms of occupancy of beds with visitors from other destinations, this significantly affects some agricultural products that were particularly attractive to these visitors.

Therefore, this aid was given for the purpose of paying financial assistance to these beneficiaries. The financing came entirely from funds of the Republic of Cyprus, the announcement concludes.
