8 out of 10 recent graduates of secondary, higher and higher education in Cyprus joined the labor market in 2023, according to Eurostat data
The performance of Cyprus in terms of the rate of direct professional absorption of secondary or higher education graduates in the European Union for 2023 is recorded by Eurostat data published yesterday.
According to the European Statistical Service, 8 out of 10 recent graduates of secondary, higher and higher education in Cyprus joined the labor market in the previous year. Despite this, our country ranks 20th out of the 27 member states of the European Union, with the rate of direct professional absorption of secondary or higher education graduates not exceeding the European average and amounting to 80.6%, marking a decline compared to 2022, the corresponding percentage reached 81.4%.
In 2023, the overall employment rate of recent graduates was 80% or higher in 22 EU countries. 🎓💼

In particular, for 2023 83.5% of recent graduates in the EU were employed, an increase of 1.1% compared to 2022 (82.4%). The overall employment rate of recent graduates was 80% or higher in 22 EU countries, including Cyprus. Our country still presents a better image than countries such as Italy and Greece, which are in the last places, with Greece registering the second lowest percentage for 2023.
It is worth noting that the European Statistical Service defines as recent graduates people aged 20-34, who graduated in the last 1 to 3 years, having completed their studies from upper secondary, post-secondary non-tertiary and tertiary education.
Steady rise over the last decade
According to what is recorded, during the last 10 years, there has been an increase in the employment rate of recent graduates, since in 2013, the rate reached 74.3% and since then it has been showing a steady increase. An exception was 2020 (78.7%), when a decrease of 2.3% was observed compared to 2019 (81.0%).
It is particularly interesting that in 2023 there was a difference of 9, 6% in the employment rate of recent graduates with a tertiary level of education (87.7%) compared to secondary school graduates (78.1%).
