The two-day summit of EU leaders, which begins today, calls for urgent decisions to halt the energy crisis that is pushing millions of households into energy poverty and thousands of businesses to wither or even close, under the ongoing state – and of profit-making companies involved in the production and supply of electricity.
The proposals that the heads of government of the Member States will have before them refer to unprecedented decisions, which if finally taken (for example the ceiling on electricity and gas prices) – even if they are not considered the most likely scenario – will enter the free market and the much-hyped competition, which for the time being only works in favor of the major producers and suppliers of electricity, in conjunction with the gas price spike that began during the pandemic and continues after the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

It is certain, after yesterday's announcement by the European Commission, that the energy sector in the EU will not be the same after the summit that will end tomorrow. It is almost certain that the leaders will approve the Commission proposal to set up a task force to manage the common market for natural gas from interested suppliers, in the model of the EU market for the coronavirus vaccine, for the benefit of all Member States.
