Lebanese politician released after 79 days

The Lebanese man, who has been seeking political asylum for six years, was released after 79 days in a Lakatamia detention cell.

Following a decision of the Department of Population Archive and Immigration of the Ministry of Interior, the person in question was notified yesterday that he remains free on parole. According to a relevant letter sent yesterday, he must report to a police station once a week and declare his permanent place of residence at the Aliens and Immigration Police Service.

The case of this person was highlighted by “P” through statements of Kassandra Koupari's lawyer, who spoke about special circumstances faced by her client, claiming at the same time that these were not taken into account by the competent state services, which rejected his request for asylum without informing him.

According to Ms. Koupari, the Lebanese architect by profession is a well-known politician in his homeland and even risked his life from a bombing by opposition figures shortly before seeking asylum. In fact, he allegedly underwent surgery on his arm, in which a synthetic implant has been placed. The asylum seeker is married to a woman holding a Swedish passport and is the father of a minor child. At the same time, he promotes the position that due to the political conditions in his country he left it without having travel documents with him.

It should also be noted that he has filed a lawsuit to overturn his deportation order to Lebanon. His lawyer raises a number of legal arguments in her application, raises the issue of human rights and additionally highlights the position that the Republic of Cyprus is preparing to send a man to a country where his life is in danger.

The UN High Commissioner for Refugees has also shown interest in the Lebanese case.
