Giovanni Padovani, who played as a center back for Sancataldese, was sentenced to life in prison for murdering his ex-girlfriend, 56-year-old Alessandra Matteuzzi, outside her home on August 23, 2022.

Alessandra was talking to her sister of Stefania, who heard her screams when the football player beat her to death.

He had flown into town and was waiting for her outside her house after his team told him to stay away from the training. He ambushed her and began beating her in a sickening attack that her sister Stefania overheard on the phone.

Witness to her sister's murder

“No Giovanni, no, please help” she screamed as she got out of her car. “I was on the phone. I immediately called the police who arrived immediately,” Stefania had revealed.

Alessandra later died in hospital, having suffered significant injuries.

The couple had been together for about a year, but they had spent most of their time apart, as Alessandra lived in Bologna and Giovanni Padovani worked in Sicily.

Stefania claimed they had an argument in January 2022, during which Giovanni Padovani broke dishes and a lamp at her home in Bologna.

After they broke up, Giovanni Padovani bombarded her with texts and calls , as a result of which she reported him to the police for stalking. This, however, did not stop him and her neighbors had claimed that he tried to break into her car and climb onto her balcony.

“She was very afraid of him because he had become stubborn and she no longer wanted to let him into the house,” said a resident of the area.

Judge Domenico Pasquariello who announced Giovanni Padovani's sentence in a Bologna court pointed out that the systematic harassment of the victim, as well as the premeditated nature of the attack, were aggravating factors.

The defendant allegedly attempted to claim that he was not in a sound state of mind at the time of the attack. “If I was perfectly lucid and competent, I deserve a life sentence. But if you think that there was something abnormal, abnormal, in my behavior, then no. I wasn't well. Because a person who is well does not kill another person. I'm in a nightmare. My remorse is a heavier burden than prison.”

Stefania was reportedly only able to utter one sentence after the hearing. She broke down in tears as she left the courtroom. “Alessandra is no longer here, my sister is no longer here,” he said with tears in his eyes.
