Linda Thomas Greenfield: US continues to support ICC solution to Cyprus problem

The US commitment to the settlement of the Cyprus issue on the basis of a bi-zonal bi-communal federation was expressed by the candidate for US Ambassador to the United Nations, Linda Thomas Greenfield. The ambassador-designate made the remarks in response to a question from Sen. Robert Menendez, who asked her how the new US administration intends to counter Turkey's efforts to push for a two-state solution. Ms. Thomas-Greenfield expressed the firm US position on the Cyprus issue and expressed Washington's readiness to assist the UN Secretary-General's efforts to convene an informal 5 + 1 meeting as soon as possible.

“The United States supports a comprehensive settlement under the leadership of Cyprus for the reunification of the island on the basis of a bi-zonal, bi-communal federation, which will benefit all Cypriots as well as the wider region. We welcome and stand ready to assist the Secretary-General's efforts to convene an informal 5 + 1 meeting as soon as possible and to facilitate the resumption of political discussions after years of stagnation. We hope that all participants will approach the 5 + 1 meeting with an open mind, flexibility and a willingness to compromise. “The responsibility for finding a solution lies primarily with the Cypriots,” he stressed.

Regarding the illegal actions for the reopening of Varos, the candidate ambassador expressed the concern of the American diplomacy, saying that it is a provocative and counterproductive move that undermines the conduct of the talks. In this light, Ms. Thomas-Greenfield said that the United States endorses the relevant statement of the President of the UN Security Council, calling for dialogue and respect for the rules of international law by all parties involved.

“The United States is deeply concerned about the unilateral decision of the Turkish Cypriots, with the support of Turkey, to open Varosia and strongly urges that this decision be revoked. The United States supports the statement by the President of the United Nations Security Council, adopted unanimously in October 2020. We consider the reopening of Varos to be a move that is incompatible with UN Security Council Resolutions 550 and 789, provocative and counterproductive to the resumption of settlement talks. “The United States supports efforts to de-escalate tensions in the Eastern Mediterranean and calls for dialogue and respect for international law,” said Linda Thomas-Greenfield.
