First of all, let me say that the concept of “Smart City” is not static – it is a dynamic and continuous evolution of various processes to more effectively address the current challenges that Local Authorities are called upon to manage, through the integration and use of digital technologies. With citizens 'demands constantly increasing, budgets shrinking and the importance of sustainability emerging as a priority on the Authorities' agendas, Cities are working to ensure a better future for themselves and their citizens through the use of data, the digitization and the cooperation and interaction of all stakeholders in their ecosystem. I agree that there is always a dimension between theory and practice. The same goes for the concept of the smart city. In this case, I believe, the dimension is constantly shrinking as there are today the means, and in particular the technology, and the tangible examples which each Local Government Authority can easily “imitate” to achieve the desired goal. >
THE EXAMPLE OF NICOSIA
At the recent conference held at the International Center for Digital Transformation and Digital Skills at CISCO entitled “Cities of the Future: Modern, Safe and Sustainable – The Time to Implement”, it became clear that the theory has now been put into practice. For example, Nicosia has already completed the preparation of a strategic study for a Smart City and has proceeded with its implementation, which is at an advanced stage. Similar initiatives have been taken by cities in Greece, such as Trikala and Athens, but also in Europe in general, such as Barcelona and Zurich. Leading cities around the world today embrace a citizen-centered ethos, using technology as a means of creating physical and digital services relevant to the 21st century. Tell us a little about your cooperation in the Municipalities of Nicosia and Paphos.
It was a great honor and joy the assignment by the Municipalities of Nicosia and Paphos of the project of implementing the infrastructure of a smart city and the culmination of an investment and efforts of several years for the development of specialization in this field. The project of the Municipality of Paphos was successfully completed within the planned schedules last December. In the Municipality was implemented by Logicom Solutions, a low power wireless network type LoRaWAN®. The LoRaWAN® network is an ideal choice for developing a network on which Smart City applications will be based. Provides extremely low power (ultralowpower) and long range (longrange) thus ensuring the longest possible battery life of devices/sensors, also allows the connection of thousands of devices with a small number of routers, as well as low operating costs in the long run. This autonomous and independent network of the Municipality is the common infrastructure that will support the operation of IoT (Internet of Things) and “Smart City” applications that will be developed by the Municipality of Paphos, as it will allow the interconnection and communication of sensors/devices that will be installed with their respective applications, which will be made available to the public. An example is the application already implemented by the Municipality & nbsp; for smart parking. In the project of the Municipality of Nicosia, which is in progress, Logicom Solutions, with its partners, has undertaken the supply, installation, operation and support of the Wireless Access Networks, the Fiber Optic Network Infrastructure, the equipment for its two Data Centers. Municipality and the infrastructure management platform. Our company, using CISCO technologies, implements in the city of Nicosia modern smart city infrastructures such as structured networks, fiber optic networks, LoRaWAN® and Wi-Fi with the aim of the easiest and most constructive involvement and participation of the citizens in the events of the Municipality. This structured smart city infrastructure architecture is the technological base on which all vertical smart city applications – information systems and applications, smart lighting, smart parking, smart air quality management/information and other environmental data – will be built. smart waste management, smart information kiosks, smart mobility and interaction of citizens, through applications and open data. & nbsp;
THE INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE IN THESSALONIKI
< b> You recently attended the International Conference of Southeast European Cities held in Thessaloniki. How important was this conference for your company?
The conference has been held with great success. The two-day event dedicated to smart cities was organized by the International Center for Digital Transformation and Skills-DT & amp; S, Cisco and the Municipalities of Thessaloniki and Trikala with the support of Logicom Solutions, which was also the main sponsor of the event. & Nbsp. With the dominant message of the need to accelerate the growth of urban centers, to utilize the available resources in a “smart” and efficient way, to contribute to the improvement of governance and to offer modern and innovative high quality services to the citizens and visitors of cities, the The international conference brought together more than 250 participants from the institutional leadership of Greece and Cyprus, the local government, but also high guests from seven other countries. Through the conference, our company managed to highlight the successful example of smart solutions of the Municipality of Nicosia and to emphasize the importance of technology in the development of Cities and Municipalities in more modern, productive, safe and sustainable organizations.
