London for the Five (5 + 1): Political equality alone is not enough to reach a solution

London considers that the parameter of political equality is not the only one that will determine the success of the efforts for a solution of the Cyprus problem, a British government source told KYPE.

“You can not single out one issue as the key to reaching a solution,” the government official said.

Officials in London also say that British support for the bi-zonal, bi-communal federation model has not changed and that the United Kingdom sees its role as “convergent” in the process of the new solution.

Whether a comprehensive formal British proposal, such as the one that was recently released, has been tabled in this role can not be confirmed by London.

“The job of countries like the United Kingdom that want to see a solution to the Cyprus problem, as well as the role of the United Nations, is to help the parties reduce their differences where there can be convergence and common interest. “There is a way if there is good will,” a British diplomatic source said.

The British Government, both publicly and privately, states that it is sincerely encouraged by the intention of all parties to sit at the table of the informal Pentagon under the United Nations.

“This is the most important thing, that everyone agreed to attend unconditionally. “Dialogue is the way to make progress on the issue,” he said.

According to the report, London's hope is to implement what has been announced as an aspiration, that is, to record sufficient common ground in the informal pentagon to develop into a formal negotiation process.

According to KYPE, during the recent visit of the British Foreign Secretary to Cyprus, which London has described as “productive”, Dominique Raab called on all parties to seize the opportunity presented by the agreement for participation in the informal Pentagon. He allegedly called on the parties to consider whether they would like to look back in the future and regret that they did not make the most of this opportunity for a solution.

The British government official who spoke to KYPE commented on this: “The 5 plus 1 talks under the United Nations are an opportunity for both sides to seize. “Not reaching a solution after so many efforts does not benefit anyone.”

London's actions are based on the view that even diametrically opposed positions can be reconciled at the time of trading. “When we get to the negotiating table in a negotiation, we do not always see the parties following to the extreme the positions they express publicly,” the British diplomatic source said.
