M. Damianos: The highest priority of the Ministry of Health is food safety

<p data-block-key=The readiness of the competent services of the Ministry of Health to guard the safety and quality of food, the Minister of Health Michalis Damianos underlines, on the occasion of the World Food Safety Day. This, he notes, is the highest priority of the Ministry of Health, as it contributes to the prevention of citizens' health.

With the theme 'Food Safety: Be Prepared for the Unexpected', this year's 6th World Food Safety Day focuses on food safety emergencies highlighting the importance of prevention.

Every year, according to the World Health Organization, 600 million people worldwide are affected by about two hundred different types of foodborne diseases, which come from eating unsafe food, contaminated with bacteria, viruses, parasites or chemicals. This fact also results in 420,000 deaths per year. Both these illnesses and deaths could have been avoided.

As stated in a statement from the Ministry of Health, preparedness to manage food safety incidents requires specific efforts by policy makers, national food safety agencies, as well as farmers, producers, food business operators and consumers themselves.

It is noted that food safety saves lives, playing a key role in reducing foodborne illnesses. 

As mentioned, the competent food safety services of the Ministry of Health – Health Services and General Chemistry of the state – and the other competent Ministries of the Republic of Korea, are in close cooperation with the European Commission and the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA), as well as with the other EU member states, actively participating in the formulation and implementation of the European Union's food safety legislative framework, as well as the implementation of relevant international standards, with the aim of ensuring safe food for Cypriots and, by extension, European consumers.

It is also noted that the EU has one of the strictest food safety systems in the world, ensuring and promoting a sustainable environment for safe food both at European and international level.
