Malta- coronavirus: Malta will offer booster doses of Covid-19 to all its citizens

Malta will offer commemorative doses of Covid-19 vaccines to its entire population, following the recent rise in cases, Health Minister Chris Fern said today.

Malta has the highest number of vaccinated people in the European Union, with 94% of its citizens fully vaccinated.

However, the Maltese Minister of Health said during a press conference that it is clear that the effectiveness of the vaccines is declining, after the health authorities announced that the country recorded 40 new cases of coronavirus today, the highest number in six weeks.

“A commemorative dose will be offered to all citizens over the age of 12,” he said.

Supplementary doses are already provided to citizens over the age of 70 and to others with health problems, with demand exceeding 70% so far.

Health professionals and teachers will be able to do their memorabilia from next week. Then, the vaccines will be offered to other categories of citizens, depending on their age, in a program that will continue in 2022 for the younger ones.

Chris Fern stressed that it is clear that vaccination made a huge difference in the fight against Covid-19. Although cases have risen, the situation in hospitals is stable, with most patients showing mild symptoms, he said.

He has so far ruled out any imminent reinforcement of restrictions in an effort to prevent the spread, but said authorities would monitor the situation closely.
