“Mykonos, despite the current crisis it is going through today, remains a stable and unchanging value for tourism. A popular and attractive global tourist destination, with millions of loyal friends, which monitors developments and strives to constantly improve”.
This is emphasized by the mayor of the island, Christos Veronis, in an interview with APE-MPE, against the background of this year's tourism year and underlines that with reference year 2019, Mykonos shows a decrease mainly in air arrivals from abroad. In fact, this fact, combined with the continuous increase in the supply of both hotel and short-term rental beds, results in a decrease in the occupancy of all tourist accommodations and also affects other sectors of the tourism economy, as stated by Mr. Mayor.
With the biggest losses being found in the American market and in that of the Far East and economically strong Arab countries in Mykonos this year, compensation is the significant increase in cruise visitors, a sector that is showing impressive dynamics this year and especially in the off-season .
Cruise welcome in Mykonos
Furthermore, after noting that there is no overtourism in Mykonos, Mr. Veronis responds to those who consider the cruise as the main cause of hypertourism stating the following: “Cruising is welcome, given that, among other things, it sustains tourist traffic and strengthens the tourist market outside the tourist season”. The goal of the new municipal authority is to restore the reputation of Mykonos, with Mr. Mayor emphasizing that Mykonos will regain its luster and remain a popular and attractive destination that is easy to visit but hard to leave.
