In a written statement, the Mayor of Strovolos, Andreas Papacharalambous, states that the decision of the House of Representatives regarding the reorganization of the municipalities is fully respected, but the final regulations and choices that have been raised raise questions and will make many citizens think.
As is well known, the Mayor of Strovolos was in favor of a large metropolitan municipality in Nicosia, something that in the end did not qualify. As he states, this remains his view and he would not change it because some, including himself, might have lost the positions they held. He stressed that it is difficult to understand why this most rational solution was finally abandoned and that he concludes that, instead of the more correct solutions, some personal expediencies or even partisan interests prevailed.
His statement:
The House of Representatives has decided on the reorganization of the municipalities and this decision is of course fully respected.
At the same time, however, the final arrangements and options that were raised raise questions and will make many citizens think.
Based on my twenty years of experience in Local Government, I have formed the certainty that the creation of a large metropolitan Municipality in the capital was absolutely necessary for the country and would definitely be the best choice for our city. This remains my view and I would not change it because some of us might lose positions.
I find it difficult to understand why this most rational solution was eventually abandoned.
I must say that the conclusion is that, instead of the more correct solutions, some personal expediencies or even partisan interests prevailed. are formed, to declare present to make together the Strovolos of the new era. The development course of our city is non-negotiable and we will continue to provide quality services to all citizens.
