The plans of APOEL and Omonia to build privately owned stadiums not only affect the GSP Stadium but also the Municipality of Strovolos which benefits – financially and not only – from the presence of the of two of Cyprus' most popular teams in his municipality.
Hence the The mayor of Strovolos, Andreas Papacharalambous, who is running for mayor again in the June 9 municipal elections, said that he is not happy about the imminent departure of the two groups from the municipality.
Being a guest on the show “2X2” with Michalis Stavrou on Politis 107.6 and after a related question was put to him, Mr. Papacharalambous stated specifically: “I personally am not happy that the unions will leave from the Municipality of Strovolos. But, each union decides for itself and based on its interests”.
The Mayor of Strovolos was also invited to speak about the entertainment tax, characterizing the judicial “victory” over it as a huge success KOA for the money owed to the municipality for years and emphasizing that there is an agreement to pay the municipality 11 million euros. He also noted that, if re-elected, he intends to allocate a significant part of the money to the creation of a municipal swimming pool.
“It is a huge success of the current municipal council. Entertainment tax… for every ticket in the GSP there is an entertainment tax. All these years we did not collect him. We filed a lawsuit against the CMO. The courts decided that this money should rightly be given to the Municipality of Strovolos and we managed to give 11 million euros, seven this year and four in 2025″, he said initially and added:
“This thing is coming to an end. We are in touch about the procedures, the final agreement is there. It's a hugesuccess. These 11 million that we will get from sports I think that to a large extent should be given back to the world for sports. My intention is, if the citizens of Strovolos honor me again with their trust, a significant part of this money will be given for the creation of a municipal swimming pool“.
