Mechanisms for restraining prices and removing possible profiteering in the field of marketing and distribution of cereals are being examined by the Ministry of Energy, Trade and Industry (YEEB), in cooperation with the Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment and the Legal Service of the Republic of Cyprus. b>
According to a press release issued by the Ministry, the problem of grain distribution is pan-European and lies in the “freezing” of the shipment of cargo from the two main suppliers of grain to Europe, Russia and Ukraine, and, consequently, the resulting price increases. >
The Ministry, it is stressed, started the effort to find price restraint mechanisms immediately after the decisions of the Council of Ministers of February 15, based on which, due to the state of emergency in Ukraine, the types of feed materials and cereals for human use were determined and increased the period for which the quantities maintained as a strategic reserve cover the needs of the Republic of Cyprus. It is noted that significant preparations have already been made for this purpose.
As the Minister of Energy, Trade and Industry, Ms. Natasa Pileidou, stated before the Parliamentary Committee on Agriculture on March 8, the Government's efforts are intensifying to find the appropriate mechanisms that will protect the consumer, but also a portion of companies, from too high prices in food and feed, with raw materials their cereals and by-products, which may appear under the pretext of price increases.
The first concern of the IEB and the Government, it is noted, is the protection of consumers and the survival of businesses, by reducing the consequences caused internationally due to the war in Ukraine. A practical proof of this is the recent reduction of the excise tax on fuels, but also the measures taken for the purchase of new stocks of cereals, the Ministry concludes.
