Until the last moment, President Anastasiadis tried to persuade Nikos Christodoulidis to respond positively to Averof Neophytou's proposal, for respect of DISY's internal party procedures, regarding the nomination of the party's candidate for the 2023 presidential elections. Last Friday morning Nikos Anastasiadis had successive telephone contacts, both with Averof Neophytou and Nikos Christodoulidis, which, however, did not work and led to the resignation of the Minister of Foreign Affairs and the statement of the President of DISY. At the same time, Ioannis Kasoulidis was called to return to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, as a reliable reserve.

Last Friday at 9 am, Averof Neophytou contacted the President of the Republic, informing him of his intention to make a statement, calling on Nikos Christodoulidis to clarify the landscape regarding his intentions. In fact, he explained that he was ready to resign from the leadership of DISY and go to the election of a new leadership from the party base, so that the new president is also a candidate for President of the Republic.
