Megan Markle: Legal trouble for violating personal data

The Duchess of Sussex Megan Markle has apologized in writing to a British court for forgetting at a previous hearing that she had authorized her senior aide to give information about her life to the authors of her biography entitled 'Finding Freedom'.

The court is considering an appeal by the owner company of the Mail on Sunday newspaper, which at first instance has been found to have violated the personal data and copyright of Prince Harry's wife by publishing a letter to Thomas Markle's father.

Proponents of her case have been working to make the actual transcript of this statement available online. Proponents of her case have been working to make the actual transcript of this statement available online.

Ms Markle acknowledged in a new email testimony she and Prince Harry had exchanged with Mr Knauf, with specific hints as to what he should bring to the attention of the biographers. Until now, Megan Markle has claimed that she had no contact or collaboration with writers Omid Scobby and Caroline Durant.

Earlier, the court also received as new information from Mr. Knauf text messages from the Duchess of Sussex asking for his opinion on the letter he had written in order to send to her father. The letter was sent in August 2018.

Ms Markle accused Mail on Sunday of violating personal data by publishing the letter a few months later, which was leaked by her father. However, in the communication with her former assistant, she makes it clear that she considered the leak of the letter in the media possible and for this reason she had chosen “meticulously” her words.

What stands out from her messages to Mr. Knauf is her admission that she chose to call her father “daddy” in the letter not only because she usually called him that, but also because she would “beat the strings of the heart” of those who would read in case of leakage.

However, she noted that what she said in the letter, in which she asked, among other things, her father to stop exposing her, was true.

The examination of the appeal will continue on Thursday.
