Message of Metropolitan George of Paphos regarding the Archbishop elections

Must read

Μorνυμα Μητρο&pi ;ολΙτη ΠΑφου Γεоργιου για τις Αρχ&iota ;επισκοπικες εκλογες

My brothers,

submitting my candidacy for the Archbishop elections is the expression of my moral debt towards Orthodoxy, Cyprus and our people.

The message  where  determines my decision this lies in the indisputable fact that the Church is the refuge of all of us. The Church is the shield for Cyprus, Hellenism and Orthodoxy and for’ for this reason we must preserve it, strengthen it and defend it. We have this debt particularly  in these difficult times of  trials and tribulations, which afflict the whole world, and  our little Motherland, which suffers under the boot of Attila for 48 whole years. Why’ this and I will fight with all my strength for the preservation of Hellenism and Orthodoxy  in our Homeland! After all, he successfully played this life-saving role during the  eight moonless centuries of slavery and suffering.  And she kept the spirit of our people hopeful and high.

This is the core of my own vision and this will be the frontispiece, based on which we will work, highlighting, on the one hand, the universal character of Orthodoxy and on the other hand, the active role and vigilance that the Church must have in  spiritual, national  and material support for our flock.

My vision for the Orthodox Church of Cyprus is expressed through the values that I embrace and promote with my life throughout the years of my career, in connection with a structured planning which will ensure the role of the Church next to Man, whose spiritual quests, reflections and needs remain constant through time.

Science and technological development have made a decisive contribution to the progress of human civilization, and in light of this continuous development and constant changes, the Church is called to give clear answers to the dilemmas and questions that constantly arise.

In this context of the data, my primary pursuit is the preservation of the tradition of our Autocephalous Church of Cyprus, which is centuries old and important due to its geographical position, which made it from the early years of Christian teaching, as a center of Christianity and a springboard for spreading the word of the Gospel. This tradition can bring our Church back to the principles and fruitful practices of approaching man, always within the framework of absolute respect for his freedom.

We as a Church must assume our responsibilities towards our national issue. We must take the lead for the moral and national armoring of our people  and all united to fight vigorously, to prevent the Turkish designs, to free our occupied Homeland from the hordes of the barbarian conqueror, to ensure the continuation of our national presence in Cyprus.

We must also lean, with a spirit of humility and discipleship, to the Holy Bible, and through its divinely inspired texts,  to draw our conclusions on the contemporary concerns of society, enlightening our flock through the Mass Media, on the most basic issues that arise before us, such as the various issues  of bioethics.

Through my candidacy I aspire to continue and strengthen the important charitable work of the Church, following the enviable and worthy work left as a legacy by our blessed Archbishop Chrysostomos B’, who spearheaded for the support of the people of our country.
My main goal is to contribute by all means to the relief of our young people and students, providing solutions related to their dignified living and housing. The Church relies on young people and their formation so that our tradition, morals and customs can continue.

My vision is to administer the Autocephalous Church of Cyprus fairly and efficiently and to cooperate with both our church leadership and  with the policy for the inalienable rights of our people and for Hellenism to remain in the area that lives and develops its Greek-Christian culture  from the depths of its history.

Cyprus needs an ecclesiastical leader who unites and embraces all people. Society needs the multidimensional work of the Church and a religious leader who can strengthen its spiritual discourse, expand its support to vulnerable groups, young men and women, and be a stable factor of social balance.

The Archbishop Elections are a historic moment  great responsibility that largely determines the future of our Church and our Country.  For this reason we must come to the polls after intense prayer and  feeling high  ecclesiastical responsibility to vote for the One whom our Christian conscience imposes on us.

I greet you with the feelings of my love in the Lord, wishing wholeheartedly the best in your life, in your family, in our Church and in our Homeland.

Met’ Heartfelt wishes

The Metropolitan of Paphos Georgios
