Alexandros Tofalidis sent a message of gratitude to all Cypriots for their support during the Olympic Games.

Among other things, he expressed gratitude for the hundreds of messages of support he received from all over Cyprus. As he mentions, many did not know him before the Olympics but believed in him.

See his detailed message:

I want to express my sincere gratitude for the hundreds of messages of support I received from all over Cyprus. Many of you who didn't know me before the Olympics believed in me and supported me, and I carried and felt that support with every stroke I made on the track. I felt like the whole island was behind me, and I can't even begin to explain the incredible energy your words of encouragement gave me.

Even though I didn't win in the end, I want all Cypriots to believe that regardless no matter how small the odds or how great the opponent, we must never give up. Believe in yourself and fight to the end.

Just by existing as Cypriots, we have already won. Our little island, conquered by countless empires, still stands proud. Our continued existence is itself a victory and a testament to our resilience throughout human history. Be proud of’ this

I carry the flag of Cyprus and the name Tofalidis, a family from the village of Diorios. My family's home has been occupied, and my family has been displaced for the past 50 years. Only nine people in the world still bear this name, and I am fighting to keep both our name and Cyprus alive.

To all Cypriots and the diaspora, I call on you to keep the Cyprus flame burning. Preserve our history, culture and achievements. If every Cypriot felt the faith and support that I felt before my Olympic competitions, we could achieve anything.

I have met many athletes from Cyprus, both at the games and before. They embody what it means to be Cypriot: hardened professionals, proud to represent their country.

They prepare for battle, often against athletes and nations much bigger and richer than us.

I wrestled the number two in the world, a true David vs. Goliath battle, and I came so close to victory. It was 700,000 Cypriots against 331 million Americans. This was a microcosm of Cyprus' struggle against much bigger and stronger opponents. Faced with adversity, we play to our strengths, hold our heads high and fight with honor. We never give up.

For all these reasons, I encourage you to continue supporting our Cypriot brothers and sisters in Paris. Like them, I have, and will continue to, sweat and bleed to bring honor to the battle for Cyprus and keep the Cyprus flame burning in the world, regardless of the outcome.

Nothing is written unless you write it. I promise to honor, support and promote Cyprus for the rest of my life, keeping the flame of our ancestors alive.
