The assessment that the project of the unified development of the Larnaca port and marina will change not only Larnaca but also the whole of Cyprus, was expressed today by the Minister of Transport, Communications and Works Alexis Vafeadis, adding that the benefits that the city will have from this development will there are too many.

The Minister was speaking during his first visit to the port of Larnaca where, together with the Deputy Minister of Shipping Marina Hatzimanoli, they attended a meeting on the Larnaca – Piraeus ferry connection which is expected to start in August.

In his statements, Mr. Vafeadis said that the visit to the port is purely informative and he wants to have a personal experience, how it is organized and how the various activities are carried out. whether what has been announced for the port and marina of Larnaca will be respected, the Minister said that “the contract with the contractor is being monitored. There is a special committee, a group of professionals who monitor the contract and so far there are no indications that cause us concern” while he noted that “we are monitoring it”.

To another question, he answered that he would also request an update on the major projects that were supposed to start on April 1 and noted that “we are asking to have a general update on all issues so that we have knowledge of how the project is progressing”.

Asked about the issue that arose with the berthing fees of private boat owners at the Larnaca marina, Mr. Vafeadis replied that “the contract allows the contracting company to regulate the fees for all the activities that take place in the port, of course under certain conditions. From a study of all the data submitted by the contractor, we have established that he has fulfilled his obligations to date and therefore has the right, if he chooses, to proceed with any charge”.

However, he noted from a conversation he had with the Cyprus Ports Authority, he was informed that “there are at least a hundred empty berths in the port of Paphos for private boat owners to moor and they can easily use them. I understand that the fees are very likely to be cheaper than the costs they had in Larnaca” he said and noted that “at least this is a relief for private boat owners and I hope they will be able to transfer their boats to the port of Paphos, if not they can afford the increased costs that Kition charges.”

Commenting that Larnaca will lose money from the owners of private boats, Mr. Vafeadis said “of course there will be a temporary reduction. However, in the long term the benefits that Larnaca will have from the development of the marina and the port will be many times greater” he said and noted that “we estimate that this project will change not only the city of Larnaca but the whole country”.

Paris Dimitriou, General Manager of the port of Larnaca was asked to comment on the concern of Larnaca residents that this large investment regarding the unified development of the city's port and marina will not be made. After stating that “all this is not true” he noted that “the investor is here, he has already hired 100 people who are working and hiring continues, while the work of renovating the dock has already started”.

“It is the first project to be done, but it has certain peculiarities because it is preserved and the maintenance work has to be done under certain specifications. The dock had to be maintained for over a hundred years and we have to do a job, with everyone's safety and health in mind,” he continued. He also noted that “from the moment the project started, it will have a positive outcome”.

When asked when the major projects will begin, Mr. Dimitriou replied that “a project of this size needs time to be done” . “There were some timetables which are observed and monitored by the Ministry” he said and added that “Larnaca should not be worried”.

In another question the Director of the port of Larnaca said that “the first phase of project started with the maintenance of the dock. The yacht club will be built at the end of the year or the beginning of the next, followed by the renewal of the floating docks and the deepening and expansion of the marina” and “all this will be done in the next 5-6 years”.

It is noted that the meeting was also attended by representatives of Services involved in the ferry connection, including the Department of Customs, the Department of Aliens and Immigration, YKAN, Port Police, Police, Ports Authority, Kition Ocean, Scandro Holding Ltd, Orthodox Travel and the port exploitation team Larnaca of the Ministry of Transport.
