Regarding the movement of immigrants within the neutral zone, on Monday morning the Community Head of the occupied Avlona, Menelaos Savva, informed the authorities of the Republic, resulting in the mobilization of the Police, as Mr. Savva himself reported to KYPE.
Specifically, the President of the Avlonas Community Council told KYPE that on Monday morning, movement was observed in the neutral zone near the community. As he said, people living in the camp set up under the supervision of the United Nations, holding placards listing their demands in English, began to move along the buffer zone towards Akaki.
The protestors, as Mr. Savva said, were moving organized and accompanied by the UN, while they also carried bags with their belongings. Noticing the movement, the President of the Community called the Police, while also informing the Deputy Ministry of Immigration about it, as he said. the Police were in the area to stop any attempt by the immigrants to cross into the areas controlled by the Republic.
Mr. Savva said that the immigrants were asking, among other things, for the safeguarding of their rights and children's access to education. He noted that at some point they did try to cross into the areas controlled by the Republic, but speaking of a “lukewarm attempt”, which failed due to the intervention of the Police. According to Mr. Savva, the protestors finally returned to the camp in the neutral zone of Avlona, after about five hours.
