Government commitment to ensuring better salaries and pensions, said the Minister. Work – “Universal and lasting peace can only be established when it is based on social justice”

The commitment of the Government to strengthen the adequacy of salaries and ensure decent pension benefits, with more social justice in the everyday lives of citizens, was expressed by the Minister of Labor and Social Insurance Yannis Panagiotou .

According to an announcement by the Ministry, Mr. Panagiotou was addressing the Plenary Session of the Global Alliance for Social Justice held on Thursday as part of the Conference of the International Labor Organization.

The Global Alliance for Social Justice was established by a decision of the International Labor Organization Conference in 2023 with the aim of promoting social justice in the formulation and implementation of public policy and in social dialogue between social partners. The Alliance has more than 250 participants, consisting of state governments, workers' and employers' organizations, and international organizations, while the Republic of Cyprus was one of the first member states to respond positively to the invitation of the Director General of the Organization.

In his speech, Mr. Panagiotou emphasized that “universal and lasting peace can only be established when it is based on social justice”.

“This is what we have stood for in this House, for more than a century, with our commitment remaining in force for years and decades to come,” he stressed.

As he said , for peace between states and peace within states, for peace that leads to the progress of humanity and the well-being of society. “And for a fair distribution of the dividends of peace, social justice is achieved through fair work, fair working terms and conditions, fair and adequate wages,” he added.

“To achieve this noble goal,” he continued, “we need evidence-based social dialogue and results-driven policy-making to develop and implement socially just policies and agreements by social partners and political leaders on the labor market of the future”.

He emphasized that “our Government is committed to ensuring better wages and better pensions, for the adequacy of the incomes of those actively participating in the labor market, so that we can maximize the potential of our economy and ensure the well-being of our citizens”.

“Our Government is determined to actively participate in the Global Alliance for Social Justice because we truly believe in its cause and want our Alliance to succeed,” he said.

Mr. Panagiotou said that our main priority in this direction is to raise the awareness of political actors at a high level and to equip them with the appropriate tools for drawing up a socially fair policy.

Concluding, the Minister of Labor said that he is “sure that our country's pilot initiative, which is promoted in close cooperation with the Director General of the International Labor Organization and his team, will be used constructively for the next ambitious steps of our dynamic alliance”.
