Their commitment to the European social contract, aiming at an inclusive, sustainable, fair and job-rich recovery, was reaffirmed by the EU member states in the framework of the Social Forum 2023 whose work ended yesterday in Porto.

Cyprus was represented by the Minister of Labor and Social Insurance Yiannis Panagiotou. A statement from the Ministry of Labor states that in the framework of the Forum, the Minister exchanged views with the Minister of Labor of Portugal Ana Mendes Godinho and other counterparts, with EU officials as well as with the Director General of the ILO Gilbert Houngbo, with whom he will be scheduled bilateral meeting during the ILO Annual Working Session in June.

As mentioned, the importance of the European social model, skills development and anti-poverty strategies was highlighted at the Porto Social Forum . “Education and training are critical investments and social rights must be prioritized for a prosperous and socially oriented European Union.”

The Porto Social Forum concluded with the commitment for collective action in addressing social challenges. In the Joint Declaration signed, Member States renewed their commitment to the European social contract, aiming for an inclusive, sustainable, fair and job-rich recovery.
