Minister of Labour: Government proposal for ATA when conditions allow

The Government will submit a proposal for the ATA after proceeding with contacts with the social partners and when it judges that the conditions allow it, said the Minister of Labor and Social Insurance Yiannis Panagiotou.

In his statements after his meeting with the social partners for ATA, the Minister expressed his satisfaction, since employers' and trade unions were at the same table, after a period of confrontation, which had ended in strike action.

He also expressed satisfaction for the desire and willingness expressed by all sides to reach, within the next period, a mutually acceptable agreement.

“It is understandable and respected that each side has its own reading, its own analysis and its own positions, but that doesn't mean we can't discuss and try to agree,” he said.

He added that for his part he set the framework by quoting the Government's position, according to which the ATA institution will not be abolished, the percentage of 100% cannot be attributed according to the economic data and the agreement must be renewed.

“This is what we will pursue, this is what we will try and this is what I am optimistic that we will achieve in the next period”, he said. He added that they agreed that statements on this issue would be avoided in the future, so as to protect the discussion between them.

The Minister noted that when there is something to announce, they will proceed with the corresponding announcements.

Asked whether he is thinking of submitting a mediation proposal, the Minister stated that his intention is through contacts that will be made directly with all the organizations to hear thoughts and to exchange views, for the Government to formulate a specific proposal, the which when it is judged that the circumstances allow it will now be submitted to the social partners.

“There are different opinions, there are different starting points, but in order to be able to agree, everyone needs to make the corresponding concessions”, he said.

When asked whether a timetable has been set for the conclusion of a proposal, the Minister noted that the schedule has not been set quantitatively, but qualitatively and should be completed as soon as possible.

He noted that everyone recognizes that this pending does not serve anyone, neither the workers who need to know if they will have a different performance through the institution than the existing one, nor the businesses, who need to do the proper planning in relation to their finances , nor the Government, which must plan the public finances accordingly.

He added that it is everyone's common belief that they will try to reach a conclusion soon.

When asked about the next meetings, the Mr. Panagiotou said that since the first day of taking office, the new Government has devoted time and a constructive attitude to the development of social dialogue.

“So the dialogue continues with all organizations and within the next time, in the next few days we will reschedule and meet again as we met today to decide how we proceed”, he said.

When asked if he was asked in the table some percentage that would satisfy both the trade unions and the employers' organizations, the Minister stated that neither in the previous meetings on his part was anything of the sort mentioned, nor in today's meeting was anything mentioned by anyone.
